AUTOTRADER/SUZUKI/JGRMX ANAHEIM ONE RACE REPORT

January 8, 2017

Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif. was host to round one of the 2017 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series.  The event began the 45th year of Monster Energy Supercross.  500 truck-loads of dirt, 6,000 labor hours, and 30 types of heavy equipment were needed to build the track.  A sold-out crowd of 45,050 fans were in attendance and Fox Sports One broadcast the entire race live.

As reported earlier, Jake Weimer is substituting for Justin Barcia while he recovers from a wrist injury.  Weimer transferred to the main event by winning Semi One and Weston Peick earned a gate for the main through Semi Two.  In the main event Peick started the race inside the top-10 and quickly settled into eighth position.  Weimer was at the front of the field entering the first turn but was pushed wide and found himself mired at the rear of the pack.  He began to work his way forward finishing just out of the top-10 in 11th place, while Peick was eighth at the checkers.

Phillip Nicoletti contested the 250SX Class aboard his Autotrader/Suzuki/Yoshimura RM-Z250.  Nicoletti transferred directly from Heat Race One despite crashing in the first turn.  In the main event Nicoletti was in third position on the opening lap when another rider inadvertently collided with him.  The impact did not cause him to crash but it did bend his rear brake pedal, which is located just under the right foot peg.  He was forced to pull into the mechanic’s area where his mechanic attempted to straighten the pedal but it was still badly bent making riding normally difficult.  He was able to salvage a 17th place finish for the night.

The next round of the 17-race series will be held in San Diego, Calif. at Petco Park on Jan. 14.  Fox Sports 1 will broadcast the race starting at 10:00 p.m. (EST).
