AUTOTRADER/SUZUKI/JGRMX DETROITRACE REPORT

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (March 26, 2017) – Ford Field in Detroit, Mich. was host to the 12th round of the 2017 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship. 46,324 fans were in attendance and Fox Sports One aired the entire event live. Detroit enjoys a storied history in Monster Energy AMA Supercross. The first race there was held 41 years ago in 1976 at the now closed Pontiac Silverdome. In all, the city has held 52 races, second only to Anaheim in total number of events. The event trademark is the section of track that runs up into the stands, a tradition that is upheld to this day.
Jake Weimer transferred to the Main Event through Semi One. Justin Barcia earned a gate for the Main Event by winning the LCQ. Barcia (along with several others) was held up in a first turn pile-up that had him starting the Main Event at the rear of the field logging in at 19th on the first lap. Weimer was running inside the top-10 on lap one before suffering a crash in the sand section that had him restarting the race in last place. Barcia advanced to 12th at the finish, Weimer worked his way to 17th.
In the 250 SX East Class Kyle Cunningham suffered a crash in qualifying that required stiches. He was attended to by the Alpinestars Mobile Medical Unit and continued on. He was further challenged by a crash during his heat while in a transfer position. He rebounded and easily transferred to the Main Event through the LCQ. A first turn crash had him starting outside of the top-10, but he made a determined effort and despite all of the setbacks was able to improve to earn fifth at the checkers, his best finish of the season.
The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis, Mo. will be the next stop of the tour on April 1. Fox Sports One will broadcast the race live starting at 8:00 p.m. (EST).
