AUTOTRADER/SUZUKI/JGRMX ANAHEIM 2 RACE REPORT
January 22, 2017
For the second, and last time in 2017 Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif. was host to Monster Energy AMA Supercross. 42,984 fans were on-hand and all of the action was broadcast live on Fox Sports One. The southern Calif. region has been getting an unusual amount of rain recently and just as with the first two rounds rain impacted the event. The track was covered during the week and Press Day riding activities were cancelled. In addition, practice and qualifying were shortened to preserve the track, so the riders had to adapt to the layout quickly. As was the case the previous two races the weather cooperated on race day and the track was in good shape.
Jake Weimer continues to substitute for Justin Barcia, who is recovering from a wrist injury and will be out at least a couple more races. Weimer transferred to the main event through Semi One and Weston Peick won Semi Two earning a gate in the main. Peick began the main in sixth position while Weimer was mired in the pack logging 21st at the conclusion of the first lap. Peick raced between sixth and seventh until moving into fifth on lap 13 where he remained until the checkers earning his best finish and first top-five so far in 2017. Weimer was able to improve to a 15th place finish.
In the 250SX West Class Phillip Nicoletti transferred directly to the Main Event through Heat Race One. Unfortunately, Nicoletti was collected in a first turn crash that had him begin the race in 20th place. Over the ensuing 15 minutes plus one lap, Nicoletti charged to finish in 12th place for the night.
University of Phoenix Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz. will host round four of the series on Jan. 28. The race will air on Fox Sports One starting at 10:30 p.m. (EST).
